Prepare to Transfer from Heartland
The Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.) and Associate in Engineering Science (A.E.S.) degrees represent the first two years of study for a bachelor’s degree. The third and fourth years of study are completed at a four-year college or university.
General Education Requirements for a Transferable Associate's degree
- Communications (9 credits)
Completing all three courses listed below satisfies the general education core requirement.
- ENGL101: Critical Reading and Writing
- ENGL102: Multimodal Composition
- COMM101: Introduction to Oral Communication
- Humanities and Fine Arts (9 credits)
- Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 credits)
- Life and Physical Sciences (7-8 credits)
- Math (3-8 credits)
All courses chosen from the disciplines listed above must be Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) approved courses.
- Electives (19-23 credits)
Although Heartland offers more than 200 elective courses, colleges and universities require different coursework in preparation for transfer. Meet regularly with an advisor to determine which courses are the best fit for your intended major.
Stay Informed
Since four year institutions vary in their requirements, A.A. and A.S. students are required to meet with an advisor to determine the sequence of courses which will most successfully transfer to the institution of their choice. Each institution will have different entrance requirements and deadlines, so consult with representatives of the college or university before completing the transfer degree program at HCC.
A useful tool for students to use are articulation guides, published by each school. These guides will inform you on how courses offered at Heartland articulate to courses offered at your intended transfer institution.
