Study Abroad Scholarships
Although study abroad programs can be expensive, there are several ways to fund the experience including through scholarships and financial aid.

Financial Aid
As educational experiences, all Study Abroad programs are eligible for financial aid funds. To determine the amount eligible and deadlines for disbursement, please contact the Financial Aid office.
Scholarships
Heartland is pleased to offer a Study Abroad Scholarship in the amount of $500 for each academic semester which can be used for any program associated with our Study Abroad program.
- Oct. 15 for Spring programs
- Feb. 15 for Summer programs
- May 15 for Fall programs

Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship
This program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. Applicants must be receiving a Pell Grant at time of application or prove that he/she will receive a Pell Grant during the study abroad term. Recipients are awarded up to $5,000
- for Spring & early summer
- March 5 for Summer and Fall programs
BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association)
To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad in England at an institutional member of the British Transatlantic Exchange Association. This is a $750 grant.
- June for the next academic year
CLS is a program of the U.S. Department of State, and is an initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. This program is FULLY funded.
- November deadline for June departure
Fund for Education Award Scholarships
This scholarship supports students who are underrepresented (minority, community college, and first-generation college students) among the US study abroad population. Grants are up to $5,000 for semester programs and $1, 250 for summer.
- January for summer and fall

IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants
The $2,000 scholarship is intended to diversify study abroad and to encourage students to go abroad who would otherwise not participate in an international experience as part of their college education, especially in support of high-achieving, low-income students.

Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP)
Students who tale part in an ICISP program are eligible to apply for the Founders’ Study Abroad Scholarship, which provides $500 for summer and $1,000 for semester programs.

- May 15 for Fall programs
ICISP also provides information on a few other scholarships, which may be of interest to you as you look to fund your study abroad experience.
