Caterpillar Engine Systems and Heartland score big for scholarships

Caterpillar Engine Systems and the Heartland Community College Foundation raised more than $40,000 for student scholarships at the tenth annual Scoring FORE Scholarships golf outing held June 2 at the Elks Lodge in Pontiac.

“Caterpillar and their partners are an example for us all: caring individuals and companies wanting to make a difference,” said Chris Downing, executive director of the Foundation at HCC. “The scholarships they create will open doors and change lives throughout our community.”

Scoring FORE Scholarships raises funds for Heartland students located in Livingston County. Since its start in 2006, the outing has raised more than $330,000 and has granted scholarships to 31 students. As a result of the recent outing, Caterpillar will award seven full-ride scholarships this coming school year.

Event participants included Caterpillar suppliers, customers, employees and retirees, as well as HCC partners and local community members. “This year marks our tenth Scoring FORE Scholarships golf outing, and the support the event receives continues to impress me,” said Operations Manager for Caterpillar Engine Systems, Susan Toher. “Once again, we generated over $40,000 for scholarship funds, enabling deserving students to attend Heartland Community College and investing in the future of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and business-related education.”

The Caterpillar Scholarship covers tuition and fees for up to four semesters. Current recipients include Kristen Kaufman, Trevar Moran, Jean Murphy, Corban Roberts, Robert Shelby and Ryan Shoemaker. Livingston County students interested in the scholarship should visit www.hccfoundation.org. Applications for the 2016-17 school year are due by July 1.
